Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.  Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students.  Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding.  These strategies are shown below.

ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Strategy 1 - Leverage tier 1 instruction by strengthening the reading workshop model components and delivery.

Strategy 2 - Strengthen core instruction by the implementation of phonics (K-2) and/or word study programs (3-6) that take place in addition to reading and writing workshops.

Strategy 3 - Implement daily phonemic awareness instruction at all levels (tiers 1, 2, and 3).

Strategy 4 - Small Group tier 2 and tier 3 instruction that targets specific literacy skills. 

ESSER III Mathematics Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Strategy 1 - Leverage tier 1 instruction by strengthening math workshop components and delivery. 

Strategy 2 - Small group work based around developing fact fluency (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Strategy 3 - Access and analyze available data (i.e. i-Ready, MCA, VGA) to determine targeted student instruction. 

Strategy 4 - Increase student and teacher use of precise mathematical language. 

ESSER III Wellness Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Strategy 1- Refine and Strengthen Tier -1 Evidence Based Strategies at all Grade Levels K-6

Strategy 2- Provide Targeted Student Support at Tier 2 and Tier 3

Strategy 3- Creating a Safe and Supportive School Environment for all Staff and Students

Background: All Fairfax County schools are also required to complete an access and opportunity goal as part of their School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) and can also capture additional goals.  These are shown below.

Access & Opportunity End of Year SMARTR Outcome

Goal: To increase access and opportunities for all students.

Strategy 1 - Teachers in grades K-6 will implement eight opportunities from the county developed Access to Rigor toolkit or other AAP curricular framework. 

Strategy 2 - Teachers will participate in multiple professional development opportunities to strengthen their understanding and ability to implement AAP curriculum for all students.

Strategy 3 - Using a school wide cluster group model to increase student opportunities as well as teacher teams to deliver research based AAP curricula.
